Introduction to Competition for Players Ages 6 - 7
The Foundations program is the second stage in the PCSC development pathway for players 6 and 7 years old, prior to joining a U9 team which participates in Utah Youth Soccer Association’s State competitive leagues. Players have the option to participate in the program for one or two years. The curriculum is based on US Soccer’s Play-Practice-Play model. This methodology provides players with productive, engaging, motivating, and FUN training environments.
The Foundations program is held 8-months out of the year: the Summer/Fall season runs from July through October and the Spring season runs from February through May. The program consists of two one-hour-long practice sessions per week.
The program differs from the Futures curriculum in that the participants will be organized into teams of 6 - 7 players that are evenly skilled. In addition to regular practices, each of the teams will play up to four games each season in a Salt Lake-based league, as well as three to four inter-squad scrimmages and an annual jamboree tournament. All Foundations players train together weekly, regardless of the team they are on.
The game format is based on US Youth Soccer’s 4 v 4 recommendations with no standings, no scores, and no goalkeepers. Along with teaching fundamental soccer skills players will be introduced to playing collectively, positional play, and the nomenclature of each position based on 4 players on the field.
The Foundations program has the same goals as the Futures program to provide a FUN, inclusive, encouraging, and safe environment while preparing athletes to enter the U9 competitive realm.
Foundation Head Coach
Foundations Head Coach
Mark moved to beautiful Utah in 2018, after playing 4 years of Division II college soccer at Dominican University of California. He took over Park City Soccer Club's Foundations Program the summer he arrived.
Mark works for Wells Fargo Advisors in Salt Lake City and, although he has a day job, he absolutely loves working with our youth in Park City.
The Foundations Program is a wonderful gateway into competitive soccer via interactive, technical, and most importantly, FUN training and game environments.
PCSC's Foundations Program is not a tryout-based program. We do, however, encourage prospective players to attend Player Placements (tryouts) in late May as an opportunity to meet Mark Caliguire, Head Coach, as well as their prospective teammates. Placements also give Mark an opportunity to gain an understanding of the numbers of interested U8/U7 players and their baseline skill level.
Player Placements for the 2024/25 season will be held on May 30

We do not hold tryouts for Foundations, so all players of the correct age are welcome to join. We highly recommend attending Player Placements in late May, however. This allows the players to "test the waters" to make sure they like it before registering and paying dues.
Attending player placements also ensures your child's spot for the season.
Registration for the Foundation program is open as long as we can maintain an appropriate coach:player ratio.
To enquire about space in the program, or to place your player on the waitlist, please reach out to PCSC Executive Director, Shelley GIllwald at sgillwald@parkcitysoccer.org.
The Foundation program trains two days per week -- Mondays and Wednesdays -- for one hour per day.
While field space and weather may modify the schedule, the program is set up with girls training 5pm - 6pm in the July through October, while the boys train 6pm - 7pm. During the February through May sessions, the times flip flop, with the boys training 5pm - 6pm and girls 6pm - 7pm.
The program takes a break from November - early February.
While the emphasis is on learning the game and development, Foundations players do participate in 4 v 4 games through the District 3 League in Sandy four times each session. Games are generally played in Midvale on Saturdays, but thee may occasionally be a Friday evening game.
In addition, Park City Soccer Club hosts a jamboree (children's tournament) each August and intersquad scrimmages from time to time.
