Foundations (U6 - U8)

Introduction to Competition for Players Ages 5 - 7

A Fun & Dynamic Introduction To Competitive Soccer

The Foundations program, now incorporating U6 players, is PCSC's introduction to the development pathway for players 5 through 7 years old.
This is the first step, prior to joining a U9 team which participates in Utah Youth Soccer Association’s State competitive leagues. Players have
the option to participate in the program for one, two or three years.* The curriculum is based on US Soccer’s Play-Practice-Play model.
This methodology provides players with productive, engaging, motivating, and FUN training environments.

*Seven year old players demonstrating the technical skill, knowledge, and confidence, may request the opportunity to tryout for the U9 level a year early.

Programming

The Foundations program is held 8-months* out of the year:  the Summer/Fall  season runs from July through October and the Spring season runs from February through May. The program consists of two one-hour-long practice sessions per week.  Girls Foundations players train together on Mondays and Wednesdays. Boys with train either Monday and Friday or Wednesday and  Friday, depending upon their developmental group placement.

U6 players will have the opportunity to sign up for just the Summer/Fall season if preferred. Spring only registration for U6 players will also be offered, on a space available basis.

Structure

To accommodate our growing program, all boy players from U6 - U8 will be placed in one of two groupings (F1 or F2) based on their developmental needs.

Foundations players in each program (Girls, Boys F1, and Boys F2) are sub-divided into organized teams of 6 - 7 players that are evenly skilled. In addition to regular practices, each of the teams will play up to four games each season in a Salt Lake-based league, as well as three to four inter-squad scrimmages and an annual jamboree tournament.

Game Format

The game format is based on US Youth Soccer’s 4 v 4 recommendations with no standings, no scores, and no goalkeepers. Along with teaching fundamental soccer skills players will be introduced to playing collectively, positional play, and the nomenclature of each position based on 4 players on the field.

Philosophy

The Foundations program has the goal of a providing FUN, inclusive, encouraging introduction to soccer, in a safe environment while preparing athletes to enter the U9 competitive realm.

About

Mark moved to beautiful Utah in 2018, after playing 4 years of Division II college soccer at Dominican University of California. He took over Park City Soccer Club's Foundations Program  the summer he arrived.

Mark works for Wells Fargo Advisors in Salt Lake City and, although he has a day job, he absolutely loves working with our youth in Park City.

The Foundations Program is a wonderful gateway into competitive soccer via interactive, technical, and most importantly, FUN training and game environments.

FOUNDATION FAQS

  • My child has never played soccer before. Can they do this program?

We do not hold tryouts for Foundations, so all players of the correct age are welcome to join, on a space available basis.

We do highly recommend attending Player Placements in late May to ensure your player is placed in the development appropriate group. This also allows your player to "test the waters" to make sure they are comfortable before you complete registeration and pay program fees.

Attending player placements also ensures your child's spot for the season, as the program does sell out.

  • My child missed Player Placements. Can we still join?

Registration for the Foundation program is open as long as we can maintain an appropriate coach:player ratio.

To enquire about space in the program, or to place your player on the waitlist, please reach out to PCSC Executive Director, Shelley GIllwald at sgillwald@parkcitysoccer.org.

  • What is the Foundations practice schedule?

The Foundation program trains two days per week, for one hour per day.

         - Girls train Monday and Wednesday

         - Boys F1 train Monday and Friday

         - Boys F2 train Wednesday and Friday

While field space and weather may modify the schedule, the program is set up with training slots either 5-6pm or 6-7pm. Head coach Mark will provide the specific time slot based on your player's grouping.

The program takes a break from November - early February.

  • Do the children play games in the Foundations Program?

While the emphasis is on learning the game and development, Foundations players do participate in 4 v 4 games through the District 3 League four times each session. Games are generally played in Midvale on Saturdays, but there may occasionally be a Friday evening game.

In addition, Park City Soccer Club hosts a jamboree (children's tournament) each August and intersquad scrimmages from time to time.
